"My horse teaches me everything I need to know about myself."

Not too long ago I watched a young lady as she was preparing to enter the show ring at a local equestrian event in Newberry, FL. She was focused. In her mind she was rehearsing each of the jumps she and her horse would make.

Communication between the rider and horse is so important as you approach a jump. And being a competition, the horse and rider are judged in just a few fleeting moments.

Capturing this young lady in her intensity, in the moment in pastel was my goal.

She was waiting, anxious but prepared and ready to ride.

I donated a painting called "In the Moment" to the Sebastian Ferrero Foundation's Noche de Gala Event at the Besilu Collection in Micanopy, FL. To see that painting, click on the tab "horse paintings" at the top of the page.

That painting's focus was the beauty and intensity of the horse or better stated "the graceful athlete".

Florida is horse country. All over the state you can enjoy watching many hunter/jumper, dressage and driving competitions and events. Lush beautiful horse farms with expansive pasture land dot the landscape.

The Mysterious Paris Building

Those of you that have been reading my blog know that I not only post about my own painting journey and artwork, but I love to introduce a few art topics that I think you might find of interest.

When on our a trip to Paris I couldn't help noticing this very unusual building while on a walk in the 12th arrondissement. I was on an elevated walkway with lots of trees and shrubs and I could only see the top of the building.
The figures on the building looked familiar like, The Dying Slave sculpture by Michelangelo, but I was in a residential section of Paris and this was a modern structure.

I have taken a fair amount of art history/architecture in college, but I was stumped.
Who was the architect and what was this building's intended use?
After some searching on the internet I discovered the blog, Invisible Paris.
Adam, the author of the blog said,
"Seen something in Paris that has caught your eye but remains a mystery, or ever wondered about obscure people or events in the city's past"?
So I emailed him.
And to my surprise and delight, he took the time to solve the mystery!

As a late entry, my name is not on the poster for this event, but I am so please to be included in the exhibition. Better late than never, huh!
My two pastels, Morning Ride, Waiting to Ride and my oil painting Mimic are part of an outstanding show EQUUS: The Art of the Horse at the Cofrin Arts Center Gallery at Oak Hall School in Gainesville FL. The show runs January 13 to Feb 17, 2012 and includes many top regional artists and is curated by Gary Bone.

Please join us at the artist's reception Friday, Jan 20 from 7 - 9 p.m.

As an added bonus, live horses will also be present at the opening in the courtyard behind the art gallery.

Opening Reception for 2012 Florida Artists Juried Exhibition

You are cordially invited to the opening reception, this Friday, for the 2012 Florida Artists Juried Exhibition hosted by Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Florida. The show is sponsored by the Gainesville Fine Arts Association. The juror and judge for the show is Dr. Jack King, Professor of Art at the University of Tampa.

Over 200 images were submitted to the show and Dr. King juried in 40 pieces. There are truly stunning pieces in this show and I am honored to be a part of this exciting exhibit.

My oil painting,The Sentinel hangs at the entrance of the exhibit. I am especially pleased at the location as it is representative of the mood and spirit of the painting.

I am very anxious to see the newly released black and white silent film The Artist,
with handsome French actor Jean Dujardin, Beranice Bejo and huggable John Goodman.
You gotta love the old silent films stars. Charlie Chaplin, Gloria Swanson, Rudolph Valentino and Mary Pickford acted with so much emotion through their facial expressions and communicated without a single word spoken.
According to last week's segment on Sunday Morning, this new film "The Artist may just be the first silent film to win an Oscar since "Wings" in 1927".

Seeing that clip reminded me that I had my own silent film. Playing with Imovie, about a year ago, I had put together a film of some of my oil and pastel paintings.

My silent film, painting a poetic vision in oil and pastel, includes portraits, landscapes, a still life and figurative works made by "this artist".
This silent film won't be up for any academy awards or Oscars, but does include some paintings that were award winners.

On the Road Again, The Kindness of a French Stranger

During our trip, we met the most incredible warm and friendly people.

But my thanks goes out to one man in particular who got us on the road again.

We had a rental car and of course before we returned it to the train station, we had to gas it up and bring it back with a full tank.

We were at a gas station in Coustelet in Provence, on a Sunday evening with no people in sight. Try as we might we could not get the pump to accept our "plastic" card.

We decided to return on Monday morning and try again but still no luck.

Getting a little nervous that we might miss our train or worse run out of gas, I asked a gentleman in the car in front of us if he could help. He tried putting the card in upside down, sideways and backwards and still no luck.

He did not speak English, but without hesitation, he motioned to us to "follow him" and he drove us through town to another station that thankfully was open and would take euro.

Now he could have just driven off and not been bothered with tourists, but he took time out of his work day to help total strangers.

Renting a car on a vacation in a foreign country is an adventure no matter where you are, but the kindness of strangers makes the trip even more memorable.

If you are planning a painting trip to France here are a few tips .

1. Take along a GPS device, it is invaluable to find gas stations, restaurants and places to buy art supplies.

2. Call your credit card company ahead of your trip and tell them you are traveling overseas so you don't have them deny your card while you are there.

3. Pack light. If you are hopping on and off trains the lighter suitcase the better. Cause you have to be nimble on your feet!

4. Use Rail Europe to purchase you train tickets before your trip. It is an easy site to use and your tickets will be mailed directly to your home before you leave.

5. If you you are renting a car, be sure you know exactly where the rental car station location is. Hopefully you rent from a company that has the drop off location next to the train station.

6. If you use the Paris Metro be sure not to put your tickets near anything magnetic,

like the clasp of a travel purse. They become demagnetized and are useless! Buy a carnet, ten tickets at a time, and save a few euro.

7. Use Trip Advisor to help plan your trip. Get the low down on hotels from people who have stayed there.

8. To and from the the airport book ahead and prepay with Super Shuttle. They meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel. You are sharing a van ride but what a great way to meet new friends!

9. If you don't speak the language and you do take a taxi, write down your destination address on a slip of paper and hand it to the taxi driver. Nothing get's lost in translation!

10. If you rent a car and are traveling in the countryside have enough cash to pay for a tank of gas...just in case your credit card doesn't work at the pump!

Lavender in Provence

Provence, think warm glorious sunshine and fields of sunflowers and lush purple lavender.
The lavender was not in bloom when we visited Provence in October, but the air still had a sweetness that well, you just can only imagine.
Just wish I could make one of those scratch and sniff patches to let you smell the aroma right through your computer screen.

And while in the beautiful countryside in Coustellet, Provence you can learn everything you ever wanted to know about lavender at the Musée de la Lavande. There is an educational tour and a lavender gift shop with all things lavender.

Did you know this about lavender?

Lavender was used by the Romans in baths and to freshen their linens. Oh those Romans.

It is part of the mint family and putting drops of essential lavender oil on your pillow can aid relaxation and sleep.

Memories De Provence

Peter Mayle wrote the best selling book A Year in Provence, in which he tells of moving into a 200 year old stone farmhouse in Provence. We had about ten days in the Luberon in Gargas, Gordes, and Avignon.
Incredible food, warm gracious friendly people, ancient buildings, ochre soil and glorious light.
Did I mention the beautiful light?

We're Not in Kansas Anymore

My pastel painting We're Not in Kansas Anymore, shown above and mentioned in two previous posts, caught the eye of Pastor Dorothy Saunderes-Perez of the Red Mountain United Methodist Church in Mesa, Arizona. She emailed me, asking permission to use my painting in their church newsletter. I was honored and pleased to share this painting with her congregation. Planes, Trains and Automobiles - Paris and Beyond

Getting there

One of the highlights of our trip was taking the high speed train (TGV) from Paris to Avignon. The restaurant Le Train Blue is located in the station and was built as part of the 1900 Paris exhibition (same as the Eiffel Tower) and was located at the Gare de Lyon to showcase the best of Paris... The ceiling has 41 paintings of places you visit by train.

Look closely, can you catch a glimpse of Coco Channel, Brigitte Bardot or Dali seated at one of the tables? They were once frequent patrons of the this restaurant.

Fast forward to the Avignon TVG station where I saw no paintings hanging on the walls, but the station is a work of art itself, with sleek modern high speed trains that will spirit you to Paris at speeds of 185 miles per hour.

Automobiles
May I just say that part of the art of driving in France is mastering roundabouts....? For those of you who live in the Midwest, where there are wide streets and large avenues and may not be familiar with this free flow of traffic concept, let's just say that instead of a four way stop you enter the outer lane of the circle and pray that someone will let you exit when you need to!!!
I think in Provence, there were roundabouts at every intersection.

Much to my husband's regret, this was not our rental car while we were traveling but is a work of "car art" in a Paris showroom.

Can't help wondering, "That guy must be flying first class cause he will never fit in a coach seat. Don't you just love that image!

Must also say the art in the Atlanta airport international terminal that welcomes you as you come back to the states and head into customs and passport control is magnificent. What a Welcome Home!

Rose Valland, a Heroine for Art

As you walk around the Tuileries in Paris you can't help but notice the beautiful fountains and flowers, but on this day I was in search of a special piece of history.

On a wall outside the Jeu de Paume in the Tuileries Garden in Paris is a plaque honoring the art historian, member of the French Resistance and perhaps one of the most heroic French women during World War II, Rose Valland.

I had often asked, "How did the great works of art survive the destruction and the ravages of World War II"?

The spellbinding documentary The Rape of Europa and the book The Monuments Men by Robert Edsel tell the heroic story of Rose Valland and the Monuments Men. The plaque on the Jeu de Paume is in honor of Rose.

During the war, the Nazis stole art works from museums and private collections and stored them in the Jeu de Paume, and all the while, Rose secretly kept records.

Wikipedia says that, "For four years she kept track of where and to whom in Germany the artworks were shipped and risked her life to provide information to the French Underground and about railroad shipments of art so that they would not mistakenly blow up the trains loaded with France's priceless treasures".

Chambord is the location where, as the Nazis advanced toward Paris, Leonardo Da Vinci's painting Mona Lisa, and the ancient Greek sculpture Venus De Milo, as well as hundreds of other priceless works of art were taken from the Louvre museum and secretly stored for safekeeping.

Midnight In Paris, Not the Movie but the Experience

Part of the joy and adventure of my trip to France was a birthday gift my daughter gave me, a boat ride at night on the Seine. The weather was perfect for seeing "The City of Lights".

Walking from the Louvre across the Le Pont des Arts, a pedestrian bridge, to the boat ramp, I was surprised to see thousands of locks covering both sides of the bridge. Hundreds of people were sitting, chatting and picnicking on the bridge. The locks glistened in the night air almost as if they were ornaments on a Christmas tree.

Being curious, I just had to ask. "What's this adornment of the bridge all about"?
I was told that people "who are in love" come to the bridge and afix a lock to the bridge as a testiment to their everlasting devotion to each other then throw the key into the Seine.
Well. such an event is not without controversy. Government officials were concerned that all these locks are defacing a national monument, a French treasure. So, one night in 2010, in the middle of the night. government officials removed all the locks.
Just as quickly as they disappeared they reappeared again.
Ah love is always in the air in Paris, I guess.

How would you feel if thousands of people wrote love messages on one of our Vermont covered bridges or placed padlocks all over the Brooklyn bridge? I am curious to hear your thoughts.

Art Walk, Gallery Hop whatever you call it in your town, the French have one night a year, usually in October, and they celebrate contemporary art from 7 PM until dawn in Paris.
Blanche Nuit, white night in Paris is a huge event where tourist attractions, museums and libraries, galleries host art and cultural events.

The Mayor of Paris says, “The most creative and most innovative work on the French and international scenes will be here for one night”.

Musée d'Orsay - No Photography?

You have traveled thousands of miles to see paintings you have long admired in the collection of the Musée d'Orsay. You remember them from your art history classes. You have your camera, an extra memory card and back up battery.

There you are in front of that Degas sculpture, Monet, Renoir, or Van Gogh painting you absolutely love...wait, what did the museum guard say, "No photographs please"???

The Musée d'Orsay now has a no photography policy throughout the museum.

While I can understand no flash photography, which is annoying and over time could be damaging to works of art, and no photography of works that do not belong to the museum, but for artists and who want to study a painting or sculpture in closer detail...what a hugh disappointment...no photographs...not even with your smart phone.

Want to Be a Copyist in the Louvre?

Mary Cassatt visited the Louvre in Paris, the most famous art museum in the world, to study and copy the masters. Renoir, Henri Matisse, Degas and countless other artists were copyists at the Louvre. Examining the brushwork, composition, color and lost and found edges of paintings by master painters is part of the copyist tradition.

In the Louvre, you are allowed to bring your own small sketchbook and draw to your hearts content.

If you wish to paint one the masterpieces, you must apply for a copyist permit. The Louvre will supply the easel, and your seat. You supply the canvas, oil paint, determination, talent and concentration.
Just think of the concentration required. If you've ever painted in front a small group of people, imagine painting in front of several thousand museum visitors.
There are a few stipulations about your painting, your canvas cannot be the same size as the original work of art and you are not allowed to copy the original artist's signature.

French, Female and a Portrait Painter

In my last post, I showed the portrait of Marie Antoinette and asked who painted it and where is it hanging now?
The French female artist who painted that portrait of Marie Antoinette was
Louise Elisabeth Vigee Le Brun (1755- 1842) perhaps the most famous female painter of the 18th century.
Above she is pictured in this charming self portrait with her daughter that hangs in the Louvre.
Being a painter is tough, being a woman who paints portraits is even tougher and being a woman painter during the age of the French revolution and having been a portraitist to the queen of France ...well enough said.

The Mob Art Exhibit, Thornebrook Gallery

Tonight is the opening of The Mob art exhibit at Thornebrook Gallery in Gainesville, FL. David Arrighi, the gallery's owner is having a 30 year anniversary celebration.
I am delighted to have one of my original oil paintings
Twilight Companions featured in this exhibit. Thirty artists will have just one of their artworks on display for just five days.
So hurry in and see this show before it's gone. Closing reception is Wednesday, Sept. 14th from 5 to 8 PM with music by the talented singer Cathy De Witt.

Also just one more day for the Putnam Land Conservancy Art exhibit at Bellamy Art Gallery in Melrose. There is a special reception Sept 9th in the evening from 6 to 9 PM.
A portion of the proceeds for the sale of all works is donated to this worthy cause.
I have four paintings on display there.

A Hole In One - Making the Right Choices

If you play golf, or know someone who does, getting a hole in one is "a big deal". Some people play golf their whole lives and never make one.

It is for one shining golden moment... the perfect shot.

Over the weekend our son called to say he had made his first hole in one at a public course near his home. He was needless to say pretty excited.

To mark the occasion, I had some fun making a "folk art" painting for him today. Now you can interpret that as folk art as in Grandma Moses style or
just one from "the folks".

Anyway, I tried to capture two moments in one in the painting; the view of the flag 172 yards away on the green with the mountains in the background and the moment of truth as he looked down into the cup to see the ball smiling back at him.
You who don't play golf may ask, does making a hole in one take skill or luck? There are usually course hazards to get into your head to intimidate you. The lay of the land can have bunkers filled with sand, a pond or a creek for your ball to swim in or rough around the green to catch your ball. YOU have to clear your mind and make some wise decisions.
Choose the right playing partner as they will attest to your honesty, choose the right club for the distance, aim correctly, swing just so, and with some luck and no spike marks on the green your ball will roll straight into the cup.

In golf or painting, as in so many activities in life, making the right choices at the right time makes all the difference.
Have you ever had a hole in one? Wishing you good luck and hoping you have a "hole in one" kind of day making the right decisions, at the right time, for whatever life challenges fill your day.

This painting is a memory of my visit to the beautiful and historic town of Essex, CT this summer. I walked down to the Connecticut River to see sailboats moored not far from the docks.

Hoping you were in a safe harbor this weekend as hurricane Irene made her way up the coast, disrupted life for many, knocking out power for thousands.

I have a tip for your hurricane preparedness. There are converters you can purchase for your car (which of course you filled up with gas before the storm) that will recharge your cell phone, camera battery or laptop. It has a usb port and an ac outlet.

Believe me when your electricity goes out and may be out for days, you will be happy you can go to your car and recharge.

Oak Hammock Art Presentation

Earlier this year I gave a presentation to the Oak Hammock Art Group. One of the subjects I talked about was exercises. We all gotta love 'em. They are good for our health. Push ups, sit ups, arm curls..ooh I am beginning to sound like a 2 AM infomercial. And truthfully I did not talk about those kind of exercises but rather art exercises.

As an artist, you often squint and look as light cascades across the surface of an object. You see a beautiful color. You ask yourself, just what color is that? So how can you fine tune and develop your "color sense"?

Larry Moore, an artist whose work I admire, gave out a painting exercise during one of his workshops and this is the art exercise tip I shared with the group at Oak Hammock. You might want to flex your painting muscles and give it a try.

Go to Lowes, Home Depot or your favorite paint store and pick up a dozen free paint chip samples. Pick out a few samples (no pain, no gain) and try to match the colors in that sample using just red, yellow, blue and white paint.

You really have to study the sample...is it warmer or cooler than what you are mixing on your palette, or perhaps lighter in value...you get the idea.

I smiled when I left the paint store the other day with a handful of green, brown, blue, mauve and orange colors "exercise" samples.
The clerk said to me, "Wow, that must be some room you are painting"!

Large oak trees are symbolic of strength and perseverance for me. They survive strong gusts and storms and give relief to those creatures who huddle under their strong outreaching arms.

When I pass by this group of trees at twilight, I often think of dear friends whose character is much like that of an oak - in the face of life's troubles, they weather life's winds of change. And with the breaking new day, they are there, steadfast to greet the new day with hope and resolve.

What an inspiration.

"Nothing is as fleeting as summer, except childhood."

What are your fond memories of long summer nights when you were growing up?
In our little town after dinner, the neighborhood children would gather with mason jars in hand to catch fireflies in someone's yard. Yes, back then we did play outdoors.
If you caught enough fireflies you would poke holes in the lid of your jar and keep it by your bedside. That lime green light would glow well into the night. I don't want to say what the boys would do with their catch! Let's just say glowing Indian war paint was their objective.

This memory painting will be available at the Putnam Land Conservancy Fundraiser and Art Auction, Sat. August 27 from 6 to 10 pm at Melrose Bay Art Gallery and Bellamy Road Fine Arts in Melrose, FL. How would you frame my Camellia Still Life painting? I chose this gold washed closed corner traditional wooden frame which I think is appropriate for the style and subject manner of the painting.

But speaking of frames..the reopening of the New American Wing Galleries for Painting, Sculpture and the Decorative Arts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City now scheduled for January 12, 2012 will highlight a spectacular American oil painting and its glorious new frame.

As a centerpiece will be one of the best known paintings in American art, the painting by Emanuel Leutze, Washington Crossing the Delaware. A new stately frame for this historically significant painting was painstakingly created by the Eli Wilner & Company.

In March of this year a spectacular perigee full moon was scheduled to make its "rise". The best place to watch this for me was near Paynes Prarie just south of Gainesville, a large flat environmentally protected state preserve with large stands of grasses but few trees to block the panoramic view of the horizon.
About 200 of us waited, hoping for continued good weather so we might not miss this special moment.

This moonrise was the largest in about 20 years and might not happen with this brilliance again in my lifetime. This magnificent moon did not disappoint us. The large crowd gathered and as the moon rose, there were a few oohs and ahhs, not like those for a 4th of July fireworks, but in hushed tones with reverence for this display by mother nature.

This oil painting is a study I will work into a larger painting.

This morning I was reminded of another summer day not too long ago. I arrived at the pasture early to watch a beautiful horse and rider go through their morning exercises.

They were as if they were one, together so graceful and elegant and moving in a cadence that was in their hearts.

A friend recently said to me, "My horse teaches me everything I need to know about myself."

The famous English landscape artist John Constable studied clouds and often wrote notes on the back of his paintings noting the time of day, direction of the wind and speed of the wind. He was very detail oriented but then again he was a painter. Hmm does that make him right brained or left brained? Good question.

If you have the opportunity, visit Yale Center for British Art in New Haven, CT, which has several Constable's cloud studies on exhibit.

When I painted this study I was thinking of the quote "For every dark cloud there is a silver lining". The power of optimism. I like that.

Standing tall and straight almost touching heaven are the hardy forests of pine trees that dot the landscape of North Carolina, Georgia and Florida and so many southern states. They greet you at many turns in the road. They echo beautiful cathedrals of grace and form. Take a moment and just breath in their sweet energy.

Cloaked in the first rays of the warm morning sun they watch over you, guardians of your day. And then at days end, they are there to greet you and renew your weary spirit.

Ahh that subtle something that fills our hearts.

The month of June has always been a time of celebration around our house.

Tomorrow my mother will celebrate a real milestone of a birthday.

She will be 92!

Next week I celebrate my own birthday. Whew and it's one of those BIG ones.

Ah yes 39 again!!

The artist in me thinks what fun it would be to decorate cakes. I must admit I have tuned into a TV show called Ace of Cake. They are well known for their outlandish, spectacular cakes.

But the most memorable cakes in my life have always been those lovingly baked and decorated by my mother. Her chocolate cake with seven minute boiled white frosting. Ahh what a sweet birthday cake and she always gave me the mixer beaters to "finish off".

At the age of 91, artist Wayne Thiebaud is know for his paintings of cakes. In fact he launched an art career painting cakes. A fascinating You Tube interview with him is located here

Finding Inspiration in Painting and Life

Inspiration Point in Yosemite National Park

I have been away. Most recently on a trip to California and Yosemite National Park. Flying into San Francisco we met our good friends Barb and Walt from Connecticut. We drove along winding roads through the Sierra Nevada mountains emerging from a mountain tunnel to this spectacular view called Inspiration Point- with the sheer granite cliff of Half Dome in the distance.

With record snowfalls and lots of rain the Yosemite waterfalls were "overflowing". But a May snowstorm with winter weather advisories closed the roads and trails and made hiking on slippery trails... not advisable.

But before leaving, we visited the Ansel Adams Gallery, an inspiration to the many photographers we saw in the park. Ansel said, "I hope that my work will encourage self expression in others and stimulate the search for beauty and creative excitement in the great world around us".

The painting Among the Sierra Nevada Mountains by the famous German American painter Albert Bierstadt certainly was painted in a search for beauty!

This painting at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. is in a quiet little alcove behind a curtain. Apparently Bierstadt was quite theatrical and often presented his huge canvases in such a display.

Everywhere you turn there are inspirational views in Yosemite.

What gives you inspiration? Is it the spectacular beauty of nature, a stirring piece of music or the quiet appreciation and gratitude for person who has lived a full and meaningful life. I'd love to hear your thoughts on inspiration.

Moon Shadow - Taking That Walk, oil

The summer of my junior year in high school was spent as an exchange student in Germany. I stayed in a small village near Fulda near the mountains, north of Frankfurt, Germany.
When I think of that summer, I remember taking walks back from the village to the home where I was staying.
Richard Harris singing McArthur's Park played over and over again on the radio.
Didn't know the meaning of the song, but it's etched into my memory along with the German night landscape.
When Carol Marine posted a photo she had taken from a recent trip to Germany as part of the DPW challenge I was stunned.
I felt as though I have been on that road, taking a walk not in the bright sunshine, but in the glow of the moon and it's shadows.
As we walked along that road, the group of us, an American girl who knew little German and her German friends, who knew little English we sang an American song which none of us understood.

Florida Plein Air Painting and Paint Outs

Early spring is a wonderful plein air and paint out season in Florida and having some shade is really important when painting outdoors, (as well as sunscreen, cool water and bug spray).

My old umbrella had seen better times so I was excited to receive my new ShadeBuddy umbrella today! This umbrella has a reflective outer surface to help keep you cool and a dark inner surface to keep your colors true.

Always great to have painting buddies.

While I was busy painting in the Melrose Open Air Arts event this last weekend, my husband was enjoying going to the plant nursery choosing plants for his garden and spending time with "spring cleanup". Butterfly plants are some of our favorites. This photo is just one of the many "friends" who have come to his garden.

In this last year I have met some of the most amazing new artist friends through workshops, blogging and paint out events.

A dear artist friend of mine from Pennsylvania, I met through blogging, Nanci Hersh has illustrated a children's book Butterfly Kisses and Wishes on Wings When when someone you love has cancer a hopeful, helpful book for kids.

Notes from the Melrose Open Air Arts-
On Friday in the park next to Melrose Bay, I couldn't help but notice a young mother and her kindergarten age son as they spent the sunny afternoon "at the beach" in Melrose.
At this shallow spot of the Bay, this little guy was launching on an adventure in his inner tube. Carefully he entered the cool water and did not venture out too far into the deeper water.
His mother kept a careful eye on him. His feet never left the sandy bottom.

What a lesson to be learned at any age.
Is it best to launch from the shallow end?
In so many of life's adventures should we test the "waters" before we take the big plunge?

Outside my studio window there are three camellia bushes that are delightfully full of blooms. Sometimes I watch the squirrels dart and dance under these bushes, totally unaware of the canopy of beauty overhead.
Rain was in the forecast yesterday. These camellia are delicate and a heavy downpour surely would have left most of the petals scattered on the ground. So, I arranged a few for a still life. What's your favorite spring flower? Hope you can take time to enjoy them!

Leslie's second day demo during Atlanta Workshop

Leslie and Dreama share a laugh...Did you say favicon?

Just returned from a workshop in Atlanta, GA. What admiration I have for the dynamic duo of Leslie Saeta, a colorful palette knife painter and marketing wiz from California and Dreama Tolle Perry from Paris, Kentucky, whose beautiful art transforms and writing motivates.
Together they host a blog talk radio program called Artists Helping Artists which airs on your computer live on Thursday at noon EST and can be downloaded for future listening through I Tunes. The show's focus is to help artists advance their careers and also to educate them on how to sell their artwork online.
Well, I come up short with all the superlatives I need to express how much I enjoyed this workshop and being in the presence of these VERY GENEROUS ladies with 23 new artist friends.
Now can you believe that after doing demos and assisting artists each day, Leslie and Dreama cooked gourmet meals for all the artists. Each night the dinners were hosted by Leslie's brother Gary and his wife Aileen in their beautiful Atlanta home. How special and welcomed did we feel.
And then on Friday night, we had a fireside chat like nothing I have ever experienced at an artist workshop. Each artist was given center stage to express their hopes and dreams for the direction of their art career.
Now, I must give a shout out of thanks to the charming and talented Kathy Cousart who was so kind to take notes for me on the first day when I could not travel to Atlanta, due to my father's health concerns and to Kelley MacDonald daily painter extrordinare and Sandra Baggette a painterly colorist and Jerry Stocks, my copilots through Atlanta's rush hour traffic. Artists helping artists....hey, that's what it was all about.

The weather outside is frightful and January skies are gray and not so delightful. The forecast is nothing but chilling...cold and rainy which is not very thrilling.
Friends living on the east coast have been plowed under with snow or not plowed for days...this I know.

Spring is at least two months away and some of you have already forgotten your New Year's resolutions!... what'd she say...?
Oh sorry, I just threw that in there.
Whew...had enough?
Well, I've been measuring mood today - time to lighten up.
Think of the first day of spring, think sun and gentle breezes. Over the hill is a spectacular view. Let's climb that hill and sit in the shade of that ancient oak tree.

Happy New Year and my sincerest wishes for joy and inner peace for you in this coming year.

With all the seriousness of New Year's resolutions, list making, goal setting, and organizing that takes place this weekend, I thought you could use a little artist humor to balance out your day.

While on an artist studio "art walk tour", I spotted this "Eyebrow Movement Analysis" taped to the wall in one of the artist's studios. Funny, yes?

And, while on a brief visit to Key West two weeks ago, we spotted this handsome fellow. We had all gathered to watch the sunset, at the most southern point in the United States.

Where's that green flash?

Now, Key West is know for some laid back craziness and "the Ernest Hemingway six toed cats" but this guy takes the cake or better yet, I think he has dipped those toes into some catnip cake. He was just as calm, cool and collected as could be, taking in the sunset with all the rest of us.
I asked Mr. Boots, my studio cat if he would ever wear such a visor. He said "No way,"Ray Bans are my style"!
Ok, now that you have seen enough of this silliness, go out and make it a great day and don't forget those resolutions you just made!

Writing, writing. writing. Tis the season for writing holiday and Christmas cards, writing year end to do lists and making those all important other "lists" and checking them twice.

Last night seated with my legs crossed, writing and writing, I thought about the figure of the Seated Scribe, in the Louvre museum in Paris. He is a masterpiece of Egyptian art.

I remembered the first time I saw him. wondering then, as I do now, "What was he writing?"

Quite a striking figure, he is rendered geometric, yet with very realistic touches. That day years ago, his fixed gaze starred right through me. He looked beyond me with his 4000 year old eyes to the courtyard of the Louvre, out to the streets of Paris and beyond.

But, last night with a chuckle, I thought of him with his fingers wrapped not around his scroll and quill pen, but with an I Pad in his lap instead.

My how our instruments of writing have changed over the years from papyrus, to

I Pad.

Sometimes you gotta have a little fun, so when George Ferreira invited artists to create works for his gator themed art exhibit, Waniguchi, the Gator and the Sake Cup ...well I just couldn't resist a parody.

Gainesville has a gothic style Century bell tower, the "bat house" bats, Saturday tailgate burgers and football fans with the craze for a certain "T-rrific quarterback".

Have you ever studied a painting and wondered. What's the narrative here? Just WHAT is the artist saying to me?

In this original oil painting I created for the Art and Apparatus exhibit at the IceHouse Gallery earlier this year, I included a number of seemingly unrelated objects - a hammer, a cryptic handwritten note, a large scholarly leather bound book, and an egg, gently cradled in a hand, (a wooden carved hand) all lit with a somewhat mysterious glow.

Does each object represent something other than it's physical reality? Is my representation of an egg symbolic of something else?

The title of the painting is "The Discovery Process".

To a writer, a naturalist, a parent, a social worker, a scientist, a lawyer, a teacher, a politician, a doctor, and an artist - there can be different meanings and interpretations.

Something Old: In a previous post, I included photos of my visit to La Maison Du Pastel, 20 Rue Rambuteau, Paris, a small shop that is like a walk back in time, not having changed much since the 1920's. There Isabelle Roché sells hand made Henri Roché Pastels. This line of pastels dates back to the 1720's.

Whether you are an artist or not, you would be fascinated by their luminosity. Many artists are blessed to have studio assistants. You know, that special someone who helps stretch canvases, deliver paintings to galleries, assist with PR material, clean brushes and tidy up the studio.

Well my assistant, Mr. Boots, a tabby cat, does help with cleaning the studio and for sure is an art critic. Just look at the expression of approval on that face!

He is working on how to speed dial Fed Ex for painting shipments, but is having a tough time with stretching canvases.

He does however, teach me valuable lessons.
When a studio painting is giving me challenges, he says to me, "Take a break, step back, come, let's go sit out in the sun, listen to the birds and hear what nature has to tell us." Not bad advice.
And by the way, he asked me if you have read about "our history" on the About the Artist page of this blog. Have you?

"Mr. Boots, my studio assistant cat received excellent care from friends during my recent trip overseas. So great, in fact, I'm not sure he even missed me!

As a thank you, to repay the kindness of his caregivers, I wanted to bring home just a little something from Italy for these friends.
I was pleased to discover a charming and inviting paper shop, Il Papiro where gift giving ideas abound.

As their website says, Il Papiro produces hand decorated paper with techniques inspired by the tradition of Tuscany - hand decorated papers on journals, books and photo frames.

This blog, My Painting Journey has been a journal of mine for almost two years. Back when I started, I didn't know the ins and outs of blogging and to tell you the truth, I am constantly learning. The intent is to share with you, my recent paintings, my art related travels and inform you of my upcoming exhibits and shows.

After returning from my recent trip I thought I could use some help with my blogging skills to better showcase my painting adventures. So with a commitment to building a more vibrant blog, I signed up for the 4-week Blog Triage class with Cynthia Morris and Alyson B. Stanfield.
I have taken a workshop with Alyson and have her I'd Rather Be in the Studio book (which I highly recommend) so I know I will be in for a great learning experience.

Zecchi in Florence-Art Supplies for the Traveling Artist

With the new airline regulations limiting the weight of checked luggage and restrictions of carry on luggage, painting the Tuscan landscape takes some planning for those visiting from overseas.
If you are visiting Florence before you head down the A1 highway, visit Zecchi, at Via dello Studio 19 in the heart of Florence just steps away from the Duomo
Their web site says, "the building that houses the Zecchi art supply store, is part of the historic seat of the ancient Studio Fiorentino, the first University of Florence (dated 1348) that gave the street its current name. The paint store - located in this street for centuries - has always been an important reference point for Florentine artisans and painters".
I stopped in to pick up some stainless steel painting knives (not the best thing to have in carry on luggage) and some canvas. The staff was so helpful. Then, what a treat to have the bells from the Duomo ring out just as I was leaving the store.

Walking the narrow streets in Florence, Renaissance art is everywhere. And as you are strolling along savoring that double scoop of gelato you just bought, be sure to look down and enjoy the art at your feet. Skillfully crafted pastel paintings are created on the streets in areas where crowds gather. The street painters in Italy are called madonnari because they often paint pictures of the Madonna as well as recreating other well known masterpieces on the pavement.

This is hard work I imagine. Crouching in an almost fetal position as you draw and your days labor always threatened by a chance of rain and at days end the inevitable large mechanical street cleaner.

With bus loads of Asian tourists passing this young painter each day, I wondered if he was using a little entrepreneurial smarts. Do you think the name on his shirt is paid advertising?

Gator Themed Art Show at Ice House Gallery In McIntosh Opens Nov. 5

Gators, Gators and more Gators.

George Ferreira is putting together a not to be missed art exhibit. Mark your calendars for the opening of this show Nov 5 at the Ice House Gallery. Gators in all shapes and forms will be the artistic theme chomp ....chomp.

What is my entry into this exhibit? Well...it is on the humorous side, a drawing on archival paper. But more on that later.

Wonder if any of you have had a first hand experience with alligators? If you want one, visit the La Chua Trail in Paynes Prairie State Preserve Park just outside of Gainesville, FL.

You will see hundreds of gators sunning themselves on the trail. There is no fence separating you from these fellows so ...watch your step and mind the small dogs and children.

But then if you want a different kind of gator experience, on any given football Saturday, there are thousands of them in the Swamp!

Discovering Monet at the Grand Palais

More than 70 museums from around the world loaned paintings to the Monet exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris. Included are more than 200 works covering 60 years of Claude Monet's career. It is the largest retrospective to be organized in his native France in 30 years. more than 83,000 tickets have already been sold and lines are long if you have not prearranged for your ticket.

The painting, Impression, Soleil Levant which gave Impressionism it's name is missing from this exhibit and is on display at Musée Marmottan Monet that is a former hunting lodge in the 16th arrondissement district. There is an interesting Wall Street Journal article about the feud over the inclusion of that painting in the exhibit. Google the article if you want some behind the scenes drama.

But be patient because it takes a while for all the information to load.
Must say I was overwhelmed. I had severe jet lag and I kept pinching myself knowing this is a once in a lifetime exhibit and I was seeing paintings I will never again see in person.
The rooms were darkly lit and the deep jewel tones of the exhibition walls made the light in the paintings radiate their glow....very captivating. As Liz Lemon says, I want to go there....again.

Just returned from a (vacation/birthday celebration) adventure in Paris, France and Italy. I cherish the moments with family, old and new friends and the opportunity to see art and architecture in Florence, Cortona, Siena, and Paris, previously I had only studied in college art textbooks.
The enchanting Tuscan landscapes and my Paris adventure will be inspiration for pastel and oil paintings in the days ahead....so stay tuned.
However, back to the plane... on flights over "the big pond" I always love to view the map in progress. Seeing where you are at 35,000 feet over the Atlantic Ocean in the middle of the night always gives one pause. As we inched closer to France on the moving map, the Guernsey Island in the English Channel was highlighted. My thoughts immediately turned from, "gee, I hope we have enough fuel to make it to Paris CDG cause I can't swim", to the... oh so charming book I listened to last summer, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. I say listened to, because many times when I am painting in the studio I listen to audio versions of books and this has superb actors. Kinda wished we weren't flying over Guernsey but were popping in for a visit with the locals.

Finding Meaning in a Pastel Painting

We're Not in Kansas Anymore

Google reminded me that today marks the 71 anniversary of the movie classic The Wizard of Oz. Two years ago I created this pastel "We're Not in Kansas Anymore". When it was on display at Sante Fe College President's Gallery in Gainesville FL, several people shared with me fond memories the painting brought back, of being a small child sitting close to their parents while watching the movie, holding tight to their parent's hands when "scary things happened".
Others felt there was a deeper meaning in my painting, in the depiction of the subject matter, the composition and use of color. Perhaps this was a tale of fearful current events?
In a previous post, I talked about what inspired me to create the painting.
All art is open to interpretation. Volunteering as a docent at the Harn Museum of Art and hearing visitors express the meaning they found in the artwork was always so enriching. Each person's view of art is a unique perspective, colored by their own knowledge and life experiences.

Landscape Painting in Gainesville, FL Remembering the Light

I guess you could call Twilight Shadow Homecoming a landscape painting of a house in Gainesville. But to me, it's more about home - a warm welcome, a happiness at day's end. Someone is on the the porch watching the dance of light and shadow as the tree branches sway in the breeze. Soon the porch light will illuminate the yard and fireflies will compete for the evening glow.

In Carlson's Guide to Landscape Painting, the author stresses the importance of painting from memory. We "relive our experiences and the effect they produced on us. The mind is dealing more with the expression of thought than with the the clever application of paint".

After hearing of the environmental disaster just unfolding in the Gulf on that day in May, I stood at the water's edge. There was stillness and unbelievable serenity. How beautiful yet how fragile these waters are.
While other painters around me were creating beautiful scenes of the manicured grounds; banyan trees, palms and flowers. My thoughts were "on the Gulf" hoping what I had heard on the news was just a dream.

Chateau de Balleroy Normandy, France, Plein Air Painting and the Balloon Museum

In 1998, American Artist Magazine published a special issue featuring 21 artists on tour in Normandy, France at the invitation of American Artist and Forbes magazine. The plein air artists painted scenes of this magnificent seventeenth century chateau and the surrounding countryside. Visiting Normandy, France had always been on my bucket list and reading that Malcolm Forbes had established the first hot air balloon museum in the stable on the grounds made a future visit all that more appealing.

Years later I did have the good fortune to visit Chateau de Balleroy, the beautiful gardens and the museum. I walked the grounds looking in every direction seeing Balleroy from all angles I thought to paint, except from above.

Fast forward to 2010 when I met Wendy and her husband Bud, who is a professional hot air balloonist. In 1993, they had been invited to the Seventeenth Annual International Invitational Balloon Meet at of all places Chateau de Balleroy! What a small world.

Wendy graciously shared her photos with me so I could at last see that view I missed, the view from above, from a hot air balloon!

Paris Velib Bike Program and The Tour de France

Ok, confession time... instead of painting today I have been watching the Tour de France. As the cyclists spin their way through France headed toward Paris, I am reminded of the many Velib' stations located throughout the city. That rental program is the only way most of us will ever be riding a bike in Paris.

Sorry Lance... for not making the team.

I do like the the basket model velib bike. Perfect for art supplies and pastels from La Maison du Pastel.

Seems there should be more emphasis on this kind of rental here in the States especially in college towns. What do you think?

But whenever you ride your bike, please wear a bike helmet.

The Moon and Our Fascination

Forty one years ago on July 20th, we on the good planet earth looked skyward watching in awe "as man walked on the moon". I remember that night just like it was yesterday.
My fascination with the moon hasn't changed much over these many years, but my interest now is painting the moon, not walking on it.
Painting moonlit scenes plein air is a challenge because, well...it's dark outside and hard to see your palette. It's best to choose a night when the moon is full and you will be amazed at how much color you actually can see once your eyes adjust to the light.
I was in Sarasota a few months ago at a workshop at the M Gallery of Fine Art with artist Mark R. Hanson. The highlight of the workshop was the night a group of about 10 of us painted in a park that overlooked the Sarasota bay. What a beautiful night! The lights of the city in the distance illuminated the sky and the sound of tree frogs serenaded in the night breeze.
The next full moon is Monday, July 26th, 2010. I'll be packed and ready to go with my booklight to light both my canvas and my paints and of course bug spray. Hey we aren't the only ones who love the moonlight!

Thomas Center 10th Annual Regional Juried Art Exhibit Gainesville, FL

My oil painting Earleton Twilight has been accepted into the 10th Annual Regional Juried Art Exhibit. The event is held July 17th to September 12, 2010 in the main gallery of the Thomas Center in the Historic District of Gainesville, FL. There is a free public reception July 22 from 5 to 7 pm.

Considered Gainesville's cultural center, the Thomas Center is housed in a beautifully restored Mediterranean Revival-style hotel. The Thomas Center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and contains art galleries, 1920's period rooms, local history exhibits, performance space, banquet rooms, and meeting rooms. The Thomas Center is surrounded by the lovely Thomas Center Gardens.

I am delighted four of my oil paintings are included in the new summer landscape exhibit at the Ice House Art Gallery and Studios in McIntosh, FL. Owner of the gallery George Ferreria creates and displays exquisite handcrafted Florida furniture and sculpture from natural and found objects. He has transformed a former ice house into a beautiful art gallery and studio space.

After delivering my paintings to the gallery, I had dinner with my parents both very young at 89 and 90. They told me stories of how when they were children in a small town in Wisconsin they would race after the ice truck to catch shavings off those big blocks of ice that had come from the ice house in their town.

More than 50 years after the Allies liberated Paris a bronze statue of Winston Churchill by French sculptor Jean Cardot was unveiled in Paris in 1998. Paid for by the French people, it is one of the few in Paris to depict a non-French public figure.

It is modeled on a photograph of Churchill marching with France's wartime leader General Charles de Gaulle down the nearby Champs Elysees on 11 November,1944.

Mr Cardot said: "I wanted to show Churchill's strength, his determination, and also his humour. "This is a man on the move, a man who won't stop."

Its plinth bears the words: "We shall never surrender."

On this and all Memorial Days, I always give thanks and have such respect for those with courage and determination who have served for freedom and peace.

Winston Churchill the painter

The Portrait Society of America organized a bus trip to the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian in Washington DC. I was pleased to study a portrait of Winston Churchill I had never seen. (This is just a portion of the painting by Douglas Chandor)

Mr. Churchill was a painter himself. In the book Winston Churchill His Life as a Painter A Memoir by His Daughter Mary Soames, there is a touching story describing how Churchill during the war convinced President Roosevel that while in North Africa he must see the sun set over Marrakesh. Roosevelt was carried up the stairs of a tower and "the two friends sat and watched the sun set in all its glory." Then in the next two days Winston Churchill, who had brought his paints with him painted, the scene. Just returned from the Portrait Society of America Annual conference where John Howard Sanden was the recipient of the 2010 Gold Medal. What an inspiration John is as well as all of the distinguished artists there in attendance.

I had just the best time with a fellow painter and dear friend who I met sixteen years ago at a workshop with Mr. Sanden at the Art Students League in New York City.

Bart Lindstrom, a superb artist from Atlanta painted in the opening night face off competition, gave an instructive and entertaining discussion on color during one of the Friday break out sessions and contributed to the Mystery Art Sale. And...my friend won his exquisite little painting.
How lucky Mary is to have that beautiful painting to take back to her home and studio. Congratulations Mary and thank you Bart for the photo op!

Open Air Arts Closing Reception April 25, 1-5 PM

Another of my paintings in this year's 4th Annual Melrose Open Air Arts event.

In the 1870's English settlers came to Earleton to build a church. The church is long gone. But I wonder if on a spring day in March over 140 years ago, on this little patch of hallowed ground - someone stood and said, "Yes, let it be here, to feel the wind, to know the birds and find peace in the glow of this setting sun".

Just Drifting

My father was a fisherman all his life. He had a little boat just like this one I saw on Santa Fe Lake this week.
At 89, when he drifts off to sleep I think he dreams he is on a lake somewhere going out to catch some bass.
I painted this one for you Dad.
Wish you could have been out there with me.

Art Exhibit at Vam York Theater

Thursday March 19th is the opening of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum at the Vam York Theater. My solo art exhibit is there in the lobby until the close of the show on April 11. There are eight paintings and it truly is a wonderful exhibit space. Thanks to Linda Pence and Leannis Maxwell for their assistance in hanging the paintings. Hope you can attend the musical.

My solo exhibit at the Vam York theater is March 18 - April 11. Several of my oil and pastel paintings will be on display in the lobby gallery during the musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.

There will be a Special Event Honoring Stephen Sondheim's 80th Birthday and Benefitting The Child Advocacy Center on March 20, starting at 6 p.m. The evening will kick off at 6 p.m. with a buffet dinner. Spring Promenade, Gainesville Sun Article

My oil painting on canvas, Alachua Blue is shown in an article about the Spring Promenade Tour of Homes that takes place in Gainesville, Florida March 5th and 6th.
The Spring Pomenade is a tour of seven historic homes in Gainesville's Duckpond Neighborhood.
The painting is hanging above the fireplace in the great room of the Morrison-Richardson House which is owned by Lauren Groff and Clay Kallman. Chrysler Building New York City

Spent a day in New York City this week and had great plans to visit The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Central Art Supply and Vasari Classic Oils.

Well mother nature had other plans, the weather was challenging with freezing rain. A huge snow storm threatened to close all metropolitan airports so it was best that we "get out of Dodge" or maybe end up sleeping at the airport for a couple of days.

On the way out of town I caught a glimpse of the Chrysler building's eagles clouded in inclement weather. The Chrylser Building is considered a master piece of art deco architecture. Here is an interesting article in Wikipedia.

A good friend lent me a intensely blue water pitcher vase. The white camelias

were from the bush outside my studio window. The resent cool weather had nipped the petals. My interest was not so much in painting the vase and flowers but in the atmosphere of the moment. Working with a palette knife is so much fun!

This summer I visited good friends in Fairfield, Connecticut.

In their garden I spent time with their beautiful grandchild.

Sometimes what we remember most are not the formal occasions with young children but the quiet moments of mystery and surprise...like a summer morning looking for "frogs" in the garden with gramps.

upcoming exhibit Small Works, Big Ideas,Thinking

Inside the Box at the Melrose Bay Gallery,

in Melrose, Fl.

For this show each artist is given a display

"box" space-18" x 42" and a requirement that no

painting plus frame is larger than 12x12".

So you get it right? We have to think "inside"

the box.

Like Atlantic Nocturne, (posted on Oct. 20.),

this painting has a softening of

focus and hint of form leaving room

for the viewer to look and linger within

the the frame at it's quiet veil of color yet

connect with their own memory.

My hope is to take you outside the box.

Vasari Classic Artist Oil Colors

I had the pleasure of visiting Vasari Classic Oil Colors

on a recent trip to New York City.

On my to do list was visiting their retail store located

in Manhattan on the 6th floor of the

Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts Studio Center.

I arrived around 11:00, Gail greeted me with some

ice cold water (she could tell I hiked over instead

of taking a cab from my hotel).

And there on a table in the center of a

large room were colors, colors, and more colors

-all their handmade artist oil colors with

a glass palette for mixing and experimenting.

Gail couldn't have been nicer. I'd pick a color

and we'd mix it with others.

I chose several colors and she carefully put

them in a beautiful gift box, then printed out a

materials list for me to include with the paints

for their journey on the plane in my checked luggage.

I paint with several brands of professional artist

oil paints -Gamblin, Williamsburg, Rembrandt,

Old Holland, Windsor Newton,

Holbein and Utrecht.

Vasari artist colors are handmade and do not include

fillers. Beautiful paint.

For artists it's fast and easy to order

paints online, but to meet and talk

with the people who make them...

we'll that is the rest and best of the story.

This large oil on canvas, is a memory painting.

I had been reading the well known book,

Guide to Landscape Painting by John F. Carlson.

His chapter on painting from memory is

well... still stuck in my memory.

Important lessons learned-use direct observation, but

then paint from memory creating an impression

and mood.
