Birthdays, Cakes and Thiebaud

Happy Birthday

The month of June has always been a time of celebration around our house.

Tomorrow my mother will celebrate a real milestone of a birthday.
She will be 92!
Happy Birthday Mom. Love you!

Next week I celebrate my own birthday. Whew and it's one of those BIG ones.
Ah yes 39 again!!

The artist in me thinks what fun it would be to decorate cakes. I must admit I have tuned into a TV show called Ace of Cake. They are well known for their outlandish, spectacular cakes.

But the most memorable cakes in my life have always been those lovingly baked and decorated by my mother. Her chocolate cake with seven minute boiled white frosting. Ahh what a sweet birthday cake and she always gave me the mixer beaters to "finish off".

At the age of 91, artist Wayne Thiebaud is know for his paintings of cakes. In fact he launched an art career painting cakes. A fascinating You Tube interview with him is located here
If you receive a Thiebaud cake painting for your birthday lucky you.
If not just enjoy YOUR birthday cake and eat it too!

Have a memorable birthday cake story? I'd love to hear it.

I know that this will be a particularly difficult birthday for your Mom, and I'll be thinking of her. And you. And - hey, are you turning 40?

Be still my heart, I have always loved Wayne Thiebaud's cakes and pies paintings and prints. Have a book of them that I treasure.

As for treasuring... Happy almost Birthday Karen, and HB to your Mom as well. May you celebrate joyfully (even if your heart is heavy)

and you don't look a day over 39!!!!

Speaking of treasuring... Happy almost Birthday Karen... and to your mom as well. Here's to you both...though your hearts may be heavy, may they be filled with joy and gratitude as well.

and you don't look a day over 39!

Happy Birthday to you and your mom!! I too feel this need to decorate cakes. One year I baked a cake in a deep bowl. I dumped it out of the bowl and left in upside down. I cored it like an apple and frosted it a gorgeous pink and for the final touch we popped a barbie down in it. It was a fabulous princess cake. Cutting the skirt(cake) was difficult but worth it! Happy Happy Day!!!!

Ruthie you are so creative. I bet that lucky someone will always remember that special cake.
When my husband worked in NYC one of the staff made a cake in the shape of a calculator. Mind you that was when calculators where like boxes that sat on your desk not the ones that are so small they fit in your pocket!!!
Have a great day and thanks for sharing your cake story!
