Lavender in Provence

Lavender Sketch
© 2011 Karen F. Rose
Provence, think warm glorious sunshine and fields of sunflowers and lush purple lavender.
The lavender was not in bloom when we visited Provence in October, but the air still had a sweetness that well, you just can only imagine.
Just wish I could make one of those scratch and sniff patches to let you smell the aroma right through your computer screen.

And while in the beautiful countryside in Coustellet, Provence you can learn everything you ever wanted to know about lavender at the Musée de la Lavande.  There is an educational tour and a lavender gift shop with all things lavender.
Did you know this about lavender?
Lavender was used by the Romans in baths and to freshen their linens. Oh those Romans.
It is part of the mint family and putting drops of essential lavender oil on your pillow can aid relaxation and sleep.

Love this sketch- simply but beautifully done and love the composition of it! I got a lavender treat by way of you from Paris and just treasure it. Wonderful soft smell and so thoughtful of you. The extra little sachets you sent for each Mom was beyond generous of you and they loved them too. I am going to print out this post so they can see your painting and learn too. Thanks Karen:)

This is such a beautiful painting. One of the places I painted while in California was at a winery which had a lavender garden. Despite the fact that the lavender had been harvested, there was still a hint of the aroma in the air.

Soft and sweet! Love this delicate painting, Karen! I still have some lavender that my daughter brought to me from Provence. She lived in Brussels for 12 years and traveled to France quite often. We loved going to the Champagne country with her on one of our visits to Brussels.

Love the delicacy and simplicity of this! Also really enjoyed your Provence blog . . . I didn't know one could be a copyist at the Louvre . . . those artists look like masters themselves!

One of the few souveneirs I bought for myself was a small bottle of lavendar oil from a woman at the organic market in Paris. Your love sketch brings back the wonderful memroies. Thank you!

Lavender is just so very wonderful! You captured its delicacy and lovely color. And, after reading Kathy Cousart's post I must tell you how wonderful you are to remember her Moms! You both are special people!
