I am continually fascinated by atmosphere in the landscape. My paintings are thus more about mood that a rendering of a specific locale.

Yesterday I delivered eight paintings to the Cultural Center at Ponte Vedra Beach for their art show Curatorial Choice on exhibit from August 8 to September 21.
The opening reception is this Friday, August 9 from 6 to 8 pm.

Four CCPVB members were chosen for the exhibit and I am delighted to be in the company of such talented artists and sculptors.

All artwork in the exhibit is available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit the many varied programs of the Cultural Center and their outreach of bringing art to local school children and the community.

Thank you for your continued interest in my art journey.  Hope you are enjoying these lazy hazy days of summer 2019.

Blenko Glass Company Art Contest

When I heard that the Blenko Glass Company was sponsoring an Art Contest inspired by their beautiful had crafted water bottle glass, I just had to enter my original oil painting Something Borrowed, Something Blue. 
I adore Blenko glass from West Virginia and I know many people collect this wonderful handblown glass in many colors and forms. The cobalt blue just speaks to me and I asked a friend if I could borrow her bottle for a floral still life painting.

A picture of all the entries in the contest is in the visitor center at the Blenko Glass Company and visitors will vote for their favorite.

Thanksgiving is just a few days away and I recall all the times I have felt so happy to be "going home".
Years ago driving home from college for Thanksgiving there was a row of trees just outside Stevensville, Michigan that lined the highway and every time I saw them I knew I was "almost there".
Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving. A time of peace and gratefulness for all the blessings in your life.

Hurricane Matthew Update - Butterfield Garage Art Gallery

It's amazing all the items that need to be replaced when they have been waterlogged in an unhealthy cocktail of storm surge.

Shelving, a desk, all bags and promotional materials, a sofa, chairs, over 30 pedestals, rugs, wallboard, new wiring, electronic equipment not to mention the artwork.

One of my favorite paintings in my exhibit at Butterfield Garage Art Gallery is River Diamonds an oil on canvas. 
I have traveled back and forth across the St. Johns River at various times of day and recently caught a view of her when "she sparkles".  

It's a magical moment.

Sooo... be there early and you will have a great opportunity to pick up a piece of art that will truly be a treasure. If you have never been to the gallery, you'll find a bright spacious venue with parking in front and behind the gallery.

The First Coast Pastel Society Member Show opens June 3 at The Cultural Center at Ponte Vedra Beach. Friday, June 3, 2016 from 5 to 8 is the opening reception. There are over 50 painting by 27 artists. Hope you will stop in and be amazed at all glorious pieces of art.

I have been soooo busy these last few months, packing moving and unpacking. I have now located to an "art studio by the ocean" and couldn't be more excited about the inspiration I will find here.

The 2015 Plein Air Convention in Monterey, CA

In the last few weeks I've traveled from the First Coast in Florida to the West Coast in California to paint plein air. The trip included attending the 2015 Plein Air Convention held in Monterey, CA with four of my very favorite painting friends.

700 painters from all over the world gathered to watch some of the rock stars of plein air painting in demos and discussions and then at the end of each day gather together to paint the gorgeous rugged coastline in Monterey and Carmel, CA.

To see some of the video highlights of the event click HERE  In the first day video, you will see me talking with Michael Harding of Michael Harding handmade artist oil colors. So many vendor opportunities to add artist supplies: Rosemary Brushes, Gamblin paints, Raymar panels, Strada easels, need I say I had to purchase an additional suitcase for the trip home!

Next years conference will be in Tucson, AZ. Good thing I already have an extra suitcase.

During my stay I also visited the De Young Museum in San Francisco and had the chance to meet up with one of my favorite paintings, Lady Agnew by John Singer Sargent. It's the first time the painting has been in the United States as it is on loan for a special exhibit Botticelli to Braque: Masterpieces from the National Galleries of Scotland.

Another favorite painting on exhibit at the De Young is The Blue Veil by Edmond Tarbell.

Such mystery and poetry in this painting.

Melrose Open Air Arts 2015 - Dogwoods, Azaleas and Pink Flamingos

This year the Melrose Open Air Arts has a welcome return March 7 to the 21. Having participated in this painting event for several years, I'm pleased that the timing is just right for blossoms and blooms to be at their peek in this sleepy little town east of Gainesville, FL. 

My Open Air Arts ritual each year is a visit to a little patch of land just west of Melrose near Earleton. Then I'm off into town to see what stirs my painting imagination.

On Tuesday, I was immediately taken with beautiful white blossoms on dogwood trees on a street with the name ...Dogwood Lane.

A brilliant azalea bush in the morning light also caught my attention. The vibrant magenta blossoms cascaded over an old white picket fence with such magical dancing shadows.

Oh I almost forgot to mention the pink flamingo yard art that made it's way into one of my paintings...just for a bit of whimsy.

Love seeing Golden Meditation on display at Fairfax Gallery in Jacksonville, Fl in such a lovely location in the gallery along with several of my other paintings on exhibit.
Reminded me of a moment when the painting received a supreme compliment. Noticing a lady gazing at the painting just lost in thought. I waited a few moments, then approached her and asked, "Seems like you are enjoying the painting"?
She paused, smiled, softly sighed and said,
"If this painting was in my home I would come home from work, sit down and just get lost in it ...melt into the twilight."
Wow, did that make my heart sing. Thank you!

In the last year I have had the pleasure of watching the sun rise over the Atlantic on more than one morning. The light of dawn brings such awe, wonder and peace.
Sunrise is a profound experience for me, a moment of spiritual connection that I hope you see in my artwork.

I wait and observe as the sun paints a beautiful canvas before me and I attempt to translate that moment....that intangible moment.

All this month I will be painting and posting more studies on my website www.karenfrose.com as part of a 30 in 30 challenge.

On a personal note there have been some challenging times for me this year and especially in the last few weeks.

Painting the Nocturne

Nocturne painting is a term used to describe a painting that depicts a scene evocative of night or a very dimly lit scene such as at twilight.

The tonalist painters of the late 19th and early 20 century have been a hugh influence on my painting style. Creating a painting to view in quiet contemplation and meditation is my hope.  

This painting Ephermeral Light has been in the works for several months and now is in it's new home.

One of the challenges of painting "in the dark" is you have a limited view of your palette. Here's an example of how I light my easel with Mighty Brite book lights.

For me, I am not seeking to give a detailed description of the place but rather a warm washed memory of the moment.
