What is it in the landscape that makes you pause for a moment and really take notice of your surroundings? A few years ago I was traveling to Melrose, Florida and saw a grove of pine trees with a bulldozer fast approaching to clear the land for a new overpass.  Later that day on my way home the trees were gone.

Stand Tall, Speak Softly is a view of three palm trees that have survived storms and hurricane Matthew and Irma. They have a story to tell if we will only listen, or are they just a passing landscape to you?

This painting and others will be part of my exhibit as featured artist of the month at Village Arts Framing and Gallery in Sawgrass Village in Ponte Vedra Beach. The Gallery is having an open house on Saturday Nov. 3. Hope to see you there.

Cooler weather is definately in the air here on the east coast of Florida. Brisk temperature always remind me of glorious tree colors of living "up north" in Connecticut and Michigan.

The beautiful hues of a moon rise over a Florida marsh are also a sight to see. Mark your calendars for the full moon in a few days on 24th.

I am honored to be the artist of the month at Village Arts Framing and Gallery in Sawgrass Village in Ponte Vedra Beach during the month of November.  The gallery will be having an Artists' Open House on Saturday, November 3 from 1 to 5 pm. If you are in the area hope you will stop by and say hello.

Standing on the beach looking at the Atlantic ocean from a Florida shore you'll feel an amazing quiet that envelopes you. The sun setting in the west lightly paints the faintest colors in eastern sky.
The noise of the day fades and there is just the whispered night.
Whispered Nocturne is part of atmospheric abstracts that I have been pursuing in my new studio.

You are invited to The Cultural Center at Ponte Vedra Beach's Celebrate Art 2017 to see this Whispered Nocturne, Eventide and In Stillness.  And art by 30 other amazingly talented artists. The exhibit runs from Jan 12, 2017 to February 18, 2017. The Cultural Center is open from 9 to 5 Monday to Friday. Sat 10 to 4. Cultural Center at Ponte Vedra Beach Celebrate Art 2017 Opening Reception

Eventide is one of my three paintings accepted into The Cultural Center at Ponte Vedra Beach's juried member art show.  The opening reception for the exhibit is Thursday, January 12, 2017 from 6 to 8 pm. The Celebrate Arts 2017 Exhibition runs through February 18th.

I'm truly honored that juror Steve Williams from the Florida Mining Gallery chose my work for the exhibit.

2016 has been eventful and for some a stressful year.  Eventide, In Stillness and Twilight Nocturne are atmospheric abstract paintings of peace and comfort.

Often at dawn or twilight I walk the beach and those moments of calm and peace are reflected in these paintings. If you attend the exhibit, I hope you'll send me a note and let me know if they resonate with you.

Rebecca Shaffer is a Contemporary Impressionist who paints in oil. So pleased to announce that my original oil paintings will be exhibited at the Butterfield Garage Art Gallery in St. Augustine, Fl.
This is a gallery of professional artists working in sculpture, glass, fiber arts, mixed media, painting, photography, woodworking, jewelry and basketry.
The gallery has been in St Augustine since 1999 and is in a vintage 1927 building.

Whetstone Chocolate  San Sebastian Winery and the Ice Plant Bar are close to the gallery and parking is available right outside the door.

First Friday Art Walks are held you guessed it, the First Friday of each month from 5 to 9 and you'll have a chance to chat with the artists and enjoy light refreshments.

First Coast Pastel Society Exhibit May 23 to June 26, 2014

Very pleased to have two of my pastel paintings juried into The First Coast Pastel Society's Member Exhibit. 
Join the members at the opening reception which is Friday, May 23, 2014. 
There will be a variety of subject matter and painting styles to delight you and you will love meeting the members of this group and seeing all the art at this wonderful venue in Ponte Vedra Beach.

The Cultural Center of Ponte Vedra in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

The First Coast Pastel Society is based in northeast Florida, covering Jacksonville, St. Augustine, and points north, west and south, and was started in January of 2012. Their goal is to reach out to pastel artists in the northeast Florida and southeast Georgia area who, until now, have not had a local pastel society to belong to.

The mission statement of the FCPS is as follows:

"To promote the use of soft pastel within the FCPS membership and the community at-large as an important and continually evolving fine art medium."

Casey Klahn the noted pastel artist from Washington was just with us for a fantastic workshop and we all benefited from his wisdom and instruction.

Inside the Artist's Studio, It's Spring!

For all of us, it's been an unusually long and cold winter... even in Florida.

Aren't you inspired by the renewal and the energy of spring.
Outside the studio, a Carolina wren is making a nest in the wreath on my door and lime green is the color of the buds on all the trees and shrubs outside the studio window...
you notice I am NOT mentioning the lime green color of all the pollen coating everything that stands still.
No, I am not mentioning it.

Inside the studio, it's a joy to open the pastel box to see beautiful gorgeous color.
But before I get to pastel or oil painting, the studio needs dusting, organizing and rearranging.

The need for spring cleaning today makes me think of Bravo Channel's show Inside the Actor's Studio.
You know the one where host James Lipton asks ten questions of his guest, the last question being

"If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates."

I have given it some thought and hope he might say, 'Karen, you have created paintings that have given people joy and touched them with serenity and peace.... but most important...your studio is FINALLY clean...you can come in now."

Here's a peek at my featured artist exhibit at High Springs Art Co-op in High Springs, FL.

The opening night was so much fun and I appreciate each and everyone that came out on opening night.

There are 18 paintings, pastels and one archival print of mine on exhibit. This gallery is a co-op of talented friendly artists and so enthusiastic. What a joy to be there.

The gallery is chock full of art and each artist has a wall space that rotates every several months. When you walk in the door you will immediately see the space for the Artist of the Month.

What a busy week!
Last Sunday I took down my exhibit at Melrose Bay Art Gallery then headed off to Leesburg, FL for a wonderful workshop. With the time change I sprang forward on Sunday, but somehow was still missing that hour of extra sleep.

Then on Thursday, there was an emergency trip to the dentist...oops.

It was back to Melrose, FL on Friday and Saturday as I am participating in the Melrose Open Air Arts.
This is a great event with 45 invited artists. Yesterday was the public painting day in four designated painting locations. 

Each year I always love sitting in the little Heritage Park by Melrose Bay. You see all manner of people and crafts on the water-fishing boats, sail boats, row boats, canoes, and kayaks. 

What kind of water crafter are you? 

Does the thrill of skimming across the water at amazing speed in the middle of a sunny day set your heart racing or
are you a Slow, No Wake kind of person taking in the sight and sounds of the lake in early morning with the sunrise glistening off the water?

I have loved painting with luscious handcrafted Gamblin Artist's Oil Colors for many years and as I mentioned in an earlier post, I received a set of Gamblin plein air oil paints as part of an award in the Women Painter of the Southeast First Annual Exhibition earlier this year.

My husband and I were planning a trip to Oregon and wanting to thank them in person and hoping to take a factory tour I contacted Pete Cole, the president of the company. Pete sent me a lovely note and I made arrangements for the tour throught Scott Gellatly and Briana Ball.  I was all set for the tour on August 17th!.

   

Gamblin product manager Briana Ball, an artist herself, could not have been more gracious, welcoming and informative. Briana, thank you.

She warmly greeted us and then took us "backstage" explaining the process from the receipt of the finest raw pigment through the mixing, careful testing, milling and packaging Then we went back to her office where she answered all my questions and demonstrated the creative possibilities of various Gamblin mediums.

You also have to love this company's culture and philosophy...dedicated to oil painters. 

I came away from this personalized tour with a new appreciation for the care and skill each employee has in making these fine oil paints. 

And all those wonderful colors and mediums are lovingly made by a dedicated staff of approximatly 20 people.

Labels are printed and placed on each tube by hand so as not to dent the tubes.

The company's care for the artist and concern for the environment is so evident.

The air filtration system in the mixing area of the factory gathers pigment dust and is collected to make an oil paint called Torrit grey. 

The mix is just a little different each year, based on the colors that have been produced. 

In the spring, when you purchase another tube of Gamblin color at you can receive a gift tube of Torrit Grey.

Gamblin's philosophy, "We believe every painting deserves to stand the test of time and are proud to provide artists with safer, more permanent oil painting materials".

First Annual Juried Exhibit and Sale

I am so pleased to have two paintings juried into the Women Painters of the Southeast First Annual Juried Exhibition and Sale at the Corse Gallery in Jacksonville, FL.

Preview night and people's choice voting is on Friday, April 27 from 5 to 8 p.m. and the opening is on Saturday, April 28th from 5 to 9 p.m. The exhibit runs through May 27.

Over 140 paintings by exceptionally talented women painters from all over the southeast will be part of this exhibit.

My painting Snow Birds, is a bit autobigraphical.

On trips to Florida for many years, people noticed the Michigan license plate on our car. They often remarked, "Oh, you are a snow bird".  A term for those of us from Michigan, who would travel to escape the three foot drifts in front of our doorways.

The conversation from the Florida locals would continue...

"Well, where in Michigan are you from"?

Because the state of Michigan is shaped like a mitten, I would always hold up my hand and point to where I lived. 

In the picture above, I am showing you just a snippet of the painting.

In my oil portrait, Snow Birds (oil on canvas, 24 x 20"), a women raises her mittened hand on which a red bird is delicately perched.

 

A velatura of snow drifts around the two figures and does not interrupt their gaze.

The paint application is purposely in an indirect manner, lit as if in a dream.

My painting The Sentinel was inspired by the quote by naturalist John Muir and by the towering pines that dot the landscape here in North Central Florida.

Some comment that there is a peacefulness and mystery to this painting. 

I wanted to engage the viewer in a journey, not describe every step of the way, but to let them find themselves in discovery.

Spring is in the air and that means time to get outdoors and enjoy the beautiful spring colors. Azaleas, dogwoods, budding trees everywhere...who doesn't love this season.
This is your invitation to join me and 17 other artists as we paint in the gardens of the Matheson House and Museum, 513 E. University Ave. on Friday, March 9th and the historic Thomas Center, 302 NE Sixth Ave in downtown Gainesville, Fl on Saturday, March 10th.

As a late entry, my name is not on the poster for this event, but I am so please to be included in the exhibition. Better late than never, huh!
My two pastels, Morning Ride, Waiting to Ride and my oil painting Mimic are part of an outstanding show EQUUS: The Art of the Horse at the Cofrin Arts Center Gallery at Oak Hall School in Gainesville FL. The show runs January 13 to Feb 17, 2012 and includes many top regional artists and is curated by Gary Bone.

Please join us at the artist's reception Friday, Jan 20 from 7 - 9 p.m. 

As an added bonus, live horses will also be present at the opening in the courtyard behind the art gallery.

2012 Florida Artists Juried Exhibition

So pleased to receive notification that my oil painting The Sentinel was accepted into the 2012 Florida Juried Artist Exhibition. Mark your calendar to view this exhibit at Santa Fe College President's Hall Art Gallery in Gainesville, FL January 13 to February 8, 2012.
This show represents artist entries from all over the state of Florida and the submissions were juried into the exhibit by Jack King, a professor of art from the University of Tampa.
Towering pines.
They are the first to catch the morning light.
The soft breeze carries their voice and song throughout the day.
They reach toward heaven.
They speak in hushed tones.
Are we listening.

Lavender in Provence

Provence, think warm glorious sunshine and fields of sunflowers and lush purple lavender.
The lavender was not in bloom when we visited Provence in October, but the air still had a sweetness that well, you just can only imagine.
Just wish I could make one of those scratch and sniff patches to let you smell the aroma right through your computer screen.

And while in the beautiful countryside in Coustellet, Provence you can learn everything you ever wanted to know about lavender at the Musée de la Lavande.  There is an educational tour and a lavender gift shop with all things lavender.

Did you know this about lavender? 

Lavender was used by the Romans in baths and to freshen their linens. Oh those Romans.

It is part of the mint family and putting drops of essential lavender oil on your pillow can aid relaxation and sleep. 

Memories De Provence

Peter Mayle wrote the best selling book A Year in Provence, in which he tells of moving into a 200 year old stone farmhouse in Provence. We had about ten days in the Luberon in Gargas, Gordes, and Avignon.
Incredible food, warm gracious friendly people, ancient buildings, ochre soil and glorious light.
Did I mention the beautiful light?

We're Not in Kansas Anymore

My pastel painting We're Not in Kansas Anymore, shown above and mentioned in two previous posts, caught the eye of Pastor Dorothy Saunderes-Perez of the Red Mountain United Methodist Church in Mesa, Arizona. She emailed me, asking permission to use my painting in their church newsletter. I was honored and pleased to share this painting with her congregation. Planes, Trains and Automobiles - Paris and Beyond

Getting there

One of the highlights of our trip was taking the high speed train (TGV) from Paris to Avignon. The restaurant Le Train Blue is located in the station and was built as part of the 1900 Paris exhibition (same as the Eiffel Tower) and was located at the Gare de Lyon to showcase the best of Paris... The ceiling has 41 paintings of places you visit by train. 

Look closely, can you catch a glimpse of Coco Channel, Brigitte Bardot or Dali seated at one of the tables? They were once frequent patrons of the this restaurant. 

Fast forward to the Avignon TVG station where I saw no paintings hanging on the walls, but the station is a work of art itself, with sleek modern high speed trains that will spirit you to Paris at speeds of 185 miles per hour.

Automobiles
May I just say that part of the art of driving in France is mastering roundabouts....? For those of you who live in the Midwest, where there are wide streets and large avenues and may not be familiar with this free flow of traffic concept, let's just say that instead of a four way stop you enter the outer lane of the circle and pray that someone will let you exit when you need to!!!
I think in Provence, there were roundabouts at every intersection.

Much to my husband's regret, this was not our rental car while we were traveling but is a work of "car art" in a Paris showroom.

Can't help wondering, "That guy must be flying first class cause he will never fit in a coach seat. Don't you just love that image!

Must also say the art in the Atlanta airport international terminal that welcomes you as you come back to the states and head into customs and passport control is magnificent. What a Welcome Home!

Midnight In Paris, Not the Movie but the Experience

Part of the joy and adventure of my trip to France was a birthday gift my daughter gave me, a boat ride at night on the Seine. The weather was perfect for seeing "The City of Lights".

Walking from the Louvre across the Le Pont des Arts, a pedestrian bridge, to the boat ramp, I was surprised to see thousands of locks covering both sides of the bridge. Hundreds of people were sitting, chatting and picnicking on the bridge. The locks glistened in the night air almost as if they were ornaments on a Christmas tree.

Being curious, I just had to ask. "What's this adornment of the bridge all about"?
I was told that people "who are in love" come to the bridge and afix a lock to the bridge as a testiment to their everlasting devotion to each other then throw the key into the Seine.
Well. such an event is not without controversy. Government officials were concerned that all these locks are defacing a national monument, a French treasure. So, one night in 2010, in the middle of the night. government officials removed all the locks.
Just as quickly as they disappeared they reappeared again.
Ah love is always in the air in Paris, I guess.
